Responding to growing concerns over threats to the global democratic stability, we seek to advance our understanding in democratic processes and institutions in changing political environments. Our lab will examine how critical trends in democracy, such as the rise of populism, the spread of false news, and political polarization, influence mass and elite behaviors, and in turn, determine democratic representation and accountability. We study these fundamental questions in democratic processes using various methodological tools, including public opinion surveys, survey experiments, and computational text analysis. Our research will provide important policy implications and novel insights into strengthening democratic legitimacy and stability.

최근 많은 민주주의 국가에서 민주주의 제도와 과정에 대한 시민들의 신뢰가 저하하고 민주주의의 정당성에 대한 근본적인 의문이 제기되는 등, 민주주의의 퇴보 (Democratic Backsliding) 현상이 공통적으로 나타나고 있습니다. 저희 랩에서는 이러한 민주주의의 위기를 진단하고 그 원인을 파악하며, 나아가 민주주의의 정당성과 지속성을 제고하기 위한 제도·사회적 해결책을 모색하는 연구를 진행합니다. 저희 랩 구성원들은 유권자의 정치 행태, 정치인의 선거전략, 입법 과정과 결과, 언론 및 소셜미디어와 여론 형성과정 등 다양한 영역에서의 정치 현상이 대표성, 책임성, 시민 참여 등의 민주주의의 지표에 미치는 영향을 연구할 계획이며, 이러한 연구는 시민들의 민주주의 제도와 과정에 대한 이해를 돕고, 국가 운영 및 정책 형성에 큰 함의를 제시하리라 기대합니다.
