Politics of Human Rights Lab intends to investigate the flourishing realm of human rights in international politics. As a global norm now, human rights has emerged as a common normative claim by all states, which has opened a new arena in which states play political games with a common goal and values at least on the surface - thus, acting as where "war of words" take place. In this vein, the international human rights regime provides an interesting window through which to observe states' political strategy on foreign policy, naming and shaming, and international, and/or internal governance. It seeks to take a multi-faceted approach to answer the questions such as: what factors influence promotion/deterioration of human rights; how and under what conditions is human rights used/or not used as a rhetoric and political strategy of states; what factors can influence promotion of global enhancement of human rights; how can human rights regime influence domestic political bargaining and so on . Starting with empirical and quantitative analysis of United Nations human rights mechanism represented by the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), PHR lab is eager to incorporate a wide range of methodologies and theories to understand intra- and inter-national politics of human rights.

국제인권랩(Politics of Human Rights Lab)은 국제정치에서 국가전략의 핵심가치로 대두되고 있는 인권 의 역할을 탐구한다. 유엔인권이사회의 등장과 함께 확립된 국제인권체제는 모든 국가가 공통의 용어와 목표를 지향하는 새로운 정치의 장을 열었다. 이러한 점에서 국제인권레짐은 네이밍앤쉐이밍(Naming and Shaming)으로 대표되는 국가의 외교전략, 국가 내부의 통치전략 뿐 아니라 국제기구의 정치화, 인권메커니즘의 제도화, 시민사회의 역할 등 국제정치를 다면적으로 관찰할 수 있는 창이 된다. 이에 따라 국제인권랩은 아래와 같은 질문에 답하고자 한다: 국제인권과 국내정치의 상호작용은 어떠한가? 인권체제는 국내외 정치협상(bargaining)에 어떤 영향을 미칠 수 있는가? 국제인권 규범을 증진하게되는 정치적 유인은 무엇인가? 국제인권랩은 보편적정례검토(Universal Periodic Review)로 대표되는 유엔 인권 메커니즘의 실증적, 정량적 분석을 시작으로 인권의 국내외 정치를 이해하기 위한 다양한 방법론과 이론을 모색하고자 한다.
