As globalization has accelerated in recent decades, societies have become more interconnected, necessitating a deeper understanding of global citizenship and its value in fostering collective responsibility, cross-cultural empathy, and social cooperation among diverse communities. The persistence of numerous global problems beyond the capacity of any one country to solve on its own – such as climate change, suicide terrorism, and economic inequality – all underscore the need for a global citizenship perspective, alongside the institution of national citizenship, within individual nation-states as well as across international arenas. Additionally, liberal democracy, as a fundamental principle of self-government, empowers citizens to participate in decision-making processes. With liberal democracy under strain around the world, innovative research is needed to cast light on what democracy requires of its citizens and how governing institutions at all levels can be revitalized, in terms of democratic responsiveness as well as overall effectiveness.
By undertaking systematic research on global citizenship and democracy, we gain the knowledge and evidence necessary to address global issues collectively and work towards a future where sustainable development and justice are at the core of societal progress. Research interests include immigration politics, multiculturalism, civil society activism, challenges to liberal democratic norms and institutions, global governance, and prospects for international democracy. We aim to develop a broad research agenda on global citizenship and democracy that encompasses political theory and empirical research.
세계화가 가속화되고, 국제 사회가 더욱 상호 연결됨에 따라 다양한 커뮤니티 간의 협력을 촉진하는 글로벌 시민의식과 그 가치에 대한 깊은 이해가 필요합니다. 기후 변화, 자살 테러, 경제적 불평등 등 한 국가가 해결할 수 있는 역량을 넘어서는 글로벌 문제가 계속되면서 세계 시민권 관점의 필요성이 더욱 강조되고 있습니다. 또한 자유민주주의는 자치의 기본 원칙으로써 시민들이 의사 결정 과정에 참여할 수 있도록 합니다. 전 세계적으로 자유민주주의가 위기를 겪는 상황에서 민주적인 대응력과 효율성 측면에서 여러 기관과 제도를 어떻게 활성화될 수 있는지를 조명하기 위해서 새로운 연구가 필요합니다.
Global Citizenship and Democracy 랩은 전 세계적인 문제를 공동으로 해결하고, 글로벌 사회의 지속가능한 발전을 위한 연구를 수행합니다. 연구 분야는 이민 정치, 다문화주의, 시민사회 활동, 자유민주주의 규범과 제도, 글로벌 거버넌스, 민주주의 등 다양합니다. 여러 정치 이론과 실증 연구를 아울러 세계 시민권과 민주주의에 관한 광범위한 연구를 수행하는 것을 목표로 합니다.
