Economic Statecraft and Institution Lab

We study the use of economic foreign policy tools to achieve political objectives and pay special attention to international institutions both as an instrument of economic foreign policy and as an arena where econoimc foreign policies play out.

Economic Statecraft denotes state's foreign strategy that employs economic instruments to achieve political objectives. Economic Statecraft and Institution Lab, building upon this concept, primarily focuses on the impact of exploring state's desired economic instrument about domestic or international institutions, whether through coercive foreign policies or economic advantages.

We place a special emphasis on international institutions as both means and arenas for shaping the states’ economic and diplomatic policies. Within these institutions, actors pursue their individual objectives and engage in bargaining based on their own interests. As the interaction between politics and economics becomes increasingly intricate, the utilization of economic tools within the international political environment continues to grow. To understand the influence of international institutions is a fundamental element in comprehending the dynamics of international relations, as it plays a pivotal role in fostering inter-state cooperation and driving the change of state behavior.

ESIL subjects out theories to various analysis using widespread range of method including regression analysis, process-tracing, case studies and different version of statistical inferences. Those are applied to a wide range of topics, such as foreign aid, trade, investment, human rights, and immigration, facilitating ongoing research endeavors. ESIL, reflecting this, aims to produce sophisticated research and generalized theories that portray domestic international interactions in the landscape of international institutions.
