The modern society is undergoing a great transformation driven by the data revolution. Such impact is also salient in the field of the social sciences and researchers are increasingly utilizing large amounts of data to answer critical questions about the world. The Data Resources in Political Science Lab at Yonsei University aims to provide a platform for students and researchers to carry out data-driven research by categorizing existing datasets and finding new datasets for research.

First, we seek to systemically categorize existing datasets in ways that allow researchers to better address their research questions. Existing datasets will be categorized according to key themes in political science, and we will also introduce research that has been carried out with the data. Such categorization will allow us to compare similar variables in different datasets, allowing researchers to select variables that are more appropriate for their research question.

Second, aside from datasets that are already being widely used, there is data that may be useful for research but has not been getting enough attention. For example, there are various non-structured data that are available online that may be helpful for research. Also, new data from lesser-known sources may not be receiving adequate attention from researchers. A second aim of this lab is to actively search for such data, introducing and utilizing them for research within the lab.

Ultimately, the objective of this lab is to categorize data in ways that will help the researcher use them. We hope to build a community around data relevant to social science research to answer questions about this world.

현대 사회는 데이터를 기반으로 한 변화의 중심 속에 있으며, 사회과학 연구 또한 데이터 중심 변화로부터 지대한 영향을 받고 있습니다. 그러나 데이터의 홍수 속에서도, 데이터를 처음 접하는 연구자가 적절한 데이터를 찾아 활용하는 방법을 터득하는 데에는 여전히 진입장벽이 존재합니다. 나아가 상당히 유용한 데이터라 할지라도, 그 존재여부를 모르고 있다면 활용이 불가능합니다.

본 랩은 이와 같은 한계를 극복하고자 첫째, 정치학에서 가장 빈번하게 활용되는 데이터를 체계적으로 정리한 웹사이트를 제작하여 운영하고자 합니다. 데이터 자체에 대한 설명만이 아니라 해당 데이터를 활용한 연구를 함께 소개하고, 유사 변수에 대한 비교분석을 실시할 예정입니다. 둘째, 기존에 활용도가 낮았던 데이터를 활용할 수 있는 방안을 탐색하고자 합니다. 가령, 비정형 데이터는 정치학 연구에 유용하게 활용될 가능성이 있음에도, 상대적으로 접근성이 떨어질 뿐 아니라 체계적으로 정리되어 있는 자료를 찾는 것 또한 어렵습니다. 이에 따라 본 랩은 관련 데이터를 확보 및 분야별로 분류하여 그 활용도를 높이고자 합니다. 또한, 이미 공개되었으니 접근성이 낮아 활용되지 못 하는 데이터를 찾고 체계적인 정리 작업을 통해 신진 연구자들의 접근성을 높이고자 합니다.

이와 같은 활동을 통해 정치학데이터랩은 데이터 활용을 위한 플랫폼을 구축하고, 장기적으로는 데이터 중심의 연구를 수행하는 연구자들이 학술적 논의를 이어갈 수 있는 구심점을 만들어 나가고자 합니다.
